چکیده

Cyanide-bearing waste water from'gold mining is usually decontaminated by oxidation so that the dissolved metals are precipitated as hydroxides. The disadvantages of this method are high consumption of chemicals and the formation and liberation of toxic compounds. Various bacterial and fungal strains capable of degrading cyanides or having a high potential for metal adsorption were isolated from water and sediment samples from a wastewater deposit in Romania. Some of the isolates were characterised and identified. For those strains showing the most rapid degradation or the greatest adsorption capacity, important parameters were analysed using synthetic media and process water and waste water from the cyanidation plant. Optimum pH and temperature levels, maximum tolerable cyanide and metal concentrations, as well as possibilities for the addition of required substances, such as hydrocarbon sources or phosphate, were determined. With a view towards the development of a pilot plant, the immobilisation of microorganisms was achieved on a natural zeolite. With a view to a technical application, further improvements are to follow as part of the development of a pilot plant.

Treatment of small scale gold mining wastewater using pilot-scale sedimentation and Cocopeat filter bed system

The use of amalgamation process to recover gold from mined ores by the small-scale gold miners in the Philippines and other developing countries produces and dispose of untreated wastewater to the receiving water bodies. In this study, a field-scale filter bed system was constructed to treat heavy metal metal-laden wastewater collected from small-scale gold mining site in Paracale, Camarines No...

Effect of Cyanide Residue on Vegetation Bordering a Black Hills Stream

This is a study of the impact of cyanide from mining waste on riparian communities, primarily vegetation, near Whitewood Creek, downstream from Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. Cyanide is used in gold processing, and the effluent, until fairly recently, was discharged directly into Gold Run Creek which empties into Whitewood Creek. Vegetation, soil, and water were collected from four ...

Metal solubilization from metal-containing solid materials by cyanogenic Chromobacterium violaceum.

Different cyanogenic bacterial strains (Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus megaterium) were cultivated under cyanide-forming conditions in the presence of metal-containing solids such as nickel powder or electronic scrap. All microorganisms were able to form water-soluble metal cyanides, however, with different efficiencies. C. violaceum was able to mobilize nickel as ...

Gold, Silver and Iron in Iron Oxy-hydroxide Precipitate Formed in Process of Acid Mine Drainage

Oxidation of sulfide-containing ores is the main cause of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), which is an environmental problem associated with both the abandoned and active mines. Iron-bearing sulfide minerals can be oxidized and form mine waters with high sulfate content, low pH, high electrical conductivity, high redox potential, and high concentrations of iron, aluminum, and other heavy metals. In th...
